An alternative to jail time

Our pop culture has made prison, and criminality cool. Ex-cons will talk about doing time, in order to look tough. Even if they weren't in for anything serious. It's seen as a prestigious thing because of Hollywood, and the music industry. So, that's not going to deter people.

I'm in favor of jail time for major crimes like murder, bank robbery, and so on. But lesser crimes shouldn't have a jail sentence attached. Humans are communal species, and this should be taken into account. Another thing to consider is that money is required for survival in civilized society.

Fines, and shaming are the solution. Have a criminal wear a orange vest with their name, and crime on it. Going outside everyday during their sentence will be hell for them. Shopping, and working will be very unpleasant for them. Shaming is enough for most people, and it's a lot cheaper than putting them in a cage.

Shoplifters, and litterers would never do it again. Because there will always be an eye on them. This may sound horrific in the individualist West, but this is a more natural approach to deterring minor crimes. An empty wallet, and a bad reputation is a very scary threat. I'm not advocating for cameras or a database. Because it won't be necessary. The criminal's community will remember him.
